GLIK 2015F: The President's Model for Innovation Winner - The Oahu Club
As part of the Global Leaders for Innovation and Knowledge program, participants are tasked to work with a local organization in Hawai'i and help with solving existing challenges and problems the organization is facing. Through the Model for Innovation Competition, the participants present their findings and recommendations at the end of the Hawaii Module to a panel of judges. The winner is presented the President's Model for Innovation award. The past semester's winners were Midhun Menon, Hoa Nguyen, Junya Miura, and Tomokazu Sakata who presented an excellent work on The Oahu Club.
The organization: The Oahu Club is a total fitness club offering everything from swimming to tennis and fitness. The Oahu Club has over 50 weekly fitness classes, swimming, tennis lessons and weekly sports camps for kids.
The Oahu Club sought the help of the participants on the following: 1) Create a marketing plan for Aloha Café to generate business, 2) Evaluate the menu items for best cost versus sale price, 3) Evaluate the work schedule for highest productivity and payroll savings, and 4) Evaluate and recommend the hours of operation for highest volume of sales.
The Findings: Through their qualitative and quantitative research, the team discovered the following: 1) Inefficient customer segmentation, 2) Ineffective use of time, 3) Lack of emotional connection, 4) Low customer awareness, and 5) Inability to capture growth opportunity.
The team devised an innovative model for business transformation called, "The CEG Model." The framework would allow the Oahu Club to focus on three things: 1) Connect, 2) Experience and Exposure, and 3) Growth optimization and improvement.
The Participants View:
Junya Miura (Japan)
At first I was assigned as a member of the Oahu club, I was very excited. Because I expected I will be able to practice knowledge that I had learned during GLIK so far. Now, I am proud of our team membership and the honorable achievement. At the same time, I realize my strong point and challenging point again through project. Hawaii project is the good opportunity to understand myself too.
Midhun Menon (India)
The Hawaii project was really an amazing experience. Considering the shorter time frame involved, we had to understand the strength of each of our group members, and to make optimum use of it. Creating consensus amidst varying opinions in a flat level group without the typical hierarchical structures was truly an amazing learning. Personally, I am extremely happy with the outcome of our project, for pushing us beyond the realms of our comfort zone, the learning it gave and of course with the coveted President's award for innovation model.
Hoa Nguyen (Vietnam)
I think I was lucky to join a team with smart guys like Midhun, Tomo and Junya. We worked together very well even though sometimes we had different points of view but we tried to compromise and that's why we could get along together well. They had great ideas for our team work. My duty was interviewing the people who came to Oahu club, who they were, what they were like, and how they used the Aloha café. Imagine you had to be at the swimming pool early in the morning but not for swimming. It was nice but trying to interview people who just got out of a swim, tired and wet, was a different thing... that not really comfortable for me. But I did it, thanks to the help of my team. Talking with kids at the pool in the afternoon, however, was much easier and nice. We all learned many interesting things from those conversations.
Tomokazu Sakata (Japan)
For the quantitative analysis we did transaction volume analysis, sales volume analysis and footfall conversion analysis. It helped us compare the various programs of Oahu Club. We also found a lot of information that were helpful in providing recommendation for the project.
