JAIMS Protégé Program: Mentoring with Aloha
As a Professor at the University of Hawai’i Shidler College of Business, JAIMS Director of Educational Programs, Constancio Paranal III, noticed that most of his Junior and Senior students still didn't know as to what they planned to do after graduation. He found it rather incomprehensible that a student could go through 2-3 years of college and still not have some direction of what he/she would like to do with his/her life. As Mr. Paranal stated, "I thought that it is such a huge disservice to one's self to not have some clear direction or goal." However, his conversations with his students led him to realize it was not that the students chose not to bear some accountability for their future, but there was a lack of guidance and support for the students. "Given the plethora of opportunities and possibilities, students nowadays are bombarded with too much information. Unfortunately, students are not equipped to handle a barrage of data and dissect it to generate meaningful information."
Similarly, as Mr. Paranal attends numerous social networking functions in the community, he has met a number of seasoned professionals who are looking for ways to help and give back. According to Mr. Paranal, "Most of these professionals are starting to work with the "millennial" and they just don't understand how their brain works, their attitude, and their behavior. They would like to know how they can help young individuals and provide some guidance as they transition into the workforce." However for these professionals, they struggle to find a program that would allow them to contribute productively given their busy schedules.
Noticing a possible gap, Mr. Paranal worked with his team at JAIMS (Japan - America Institute of Management Science) to come up with a program that would help address the issue. The JAIMS team thought of a program that would provide a collaborative and nurturing environment for both professionals and students to work together and develop meaningful relationships that is more than simply exchanging business cards over lunch or dinner. During the discussion, the team thought of developing a program that will promote commitment and responsibility from both Mentors and Mentees in charting positive growth - personally and professionally. After some deliberation, the team came up with the JAIMS Protégé Program (JPP).
On November 12, JAIMS (Japan-America Institute of Management Science) sponsored a Pau Hana event to launch its first-ever mentorship program dedicated to building professional relationships within the community. The objectives of the program include:
· assisting students in charting their own careers through college and beyond,
· providing mentors a better understanding of the millennial generation, and
· fostering a mutually beneficial life-long relationship amongst JPP participants.
Unlike other mentorship program, JPP is guided by four modules: 1) Goal Setting, 2) Personal Interest, 3) Self Discovery and Assessment, and 4) Career Planning. The modules have been designed to support the development and growth of the relationship. The mentor and mentee will have the liberty to design their own activities in ways that are agreeable for the partnership. JAIMS will be responsible for ensuring that partnerships are making progress thru regular touch points and Pau Hana events sponsored by the institute.
The program runs for 6 months from November 2015 thru April 2016. The remaining Pau Hana events are scheduled on February 4th and April 7th. JAIMS welcomed its first cohort of JPP mentors and mentees and is delighted to share this program with the local community. *
