Ready for 2016-2017 JPP? What does JPP Participants say about the program?
Jill Feldon, Vice president, Public Relations, Communications and Brand Management, Kaiser Permanente
"It was wonderful getting to know Linda and assisting with some of her career questions. I was able to provide her with an opportunity to meet people at Kaiser Permanente who are in the field (Finance) she is exploring so she could learn more about it. Thank you for this great opportunity to mentor as well as to learn from her."
Jamie Ikeda, Sophomore at UH Manoa majoring in Marketing
"The overall program was a great experience! While my mentor and I weren't able to get through all the activities we were able to narrow down and focus on the ones we felt were the most important at the time. Just like meeting anyone new, it's a bit nerve wracking during the first few times but after a while conversation was able to flow easily. All the other participants and mentors were also easy to get along with. (I personally felt it was wonderful that the program encouraged us and provided us time to make connections with all the other mentors in addition to our own.) It was unfortunate that my mentor had to leave before the end of the program due to work but he was very open and told me to contact him with any other questions I may have. I'm so honored to have had my mentor who provided me with both professional and general life advice that I know I'll be using in the future. Thank you for the experience."
Takeshi Horii, Board Director, SANNO Institute of Management
"This JPP provided me with an opportunity to learn what young generation of people has in mind. I provided the mentee with my view, advice and what I consider common sense in the business world. The mentee does not necessarily need to follow mentor's specific advice since it is one experienced person's view but may not be generally applicable. Nevertheless, such advice and view should be a hint for the mentee to broaden a thought process. I have also benefited by learning fresh views and questions of young generation. Given the win-win process, JAIMS should continue this program as an organizer and facilitator."
Kimberly Bonilla, Sophomore, UH Manoa, Marketing and International Business
"I am currently a sophomore at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and I will be majoring in Marketing along with International Business. It's an honor for me to become a part of the JAIMS program where I was able to connect with my mentor, the staff members of the program, and the other students as well. Being a part of the program has given me the opportunity to come out of my comfort zone. I would like to say thank to you everyone in the program for this amazing opportunity."
Phyllis Fujiwara, Chief Financial Officer, Jeans Warehouse, Inc.
"The Protégé Program with JAIMS provided an excellent opportunity for college students to gain knowledge first-hand in the working arena. Each student (mentee) was paired with a working professional (mentor) with at least four years of working experience. The mentee had the opportunity to discuss their interests and capabilities. The mentor would share not only their experiences as a professional but also their challenges as a student. I was fortunate to be paired with an accounting student so it was easy to share my experiences with her. I took her on a tour of one of our Jeans Warehouse stores and explained how the operations worked and business decisions that were necessary to be successful. We also toured our warehouse and administrative offices. I eventually offered her an internship that provided her the opportunity to work in an accounting department as a paid employee. The Protégé Program with JAIMS got off to an excellent start and I am sure will be successful in the future. Mr. Paranal is extremely dedicated to the program I have even offered my services to Mr. Paranal for future programs."
Alexa Nucum, Sophomore at University of Hawaii at Manoa, International Business
"During my first semester at the University, I was enrolled in Business 200 with Professor Paranal. One day, before the class had ended Professor Paranal shared a little about JAIMS and his involvement. He mentioned a Mentor--Mentee opportunity and a way for college students to interact with Business professionals. Coming straight out of a small high school and into a large University was very intimidating and I was no longer surrounded by the teachers and faculty I had grew up around. I wanted a way to connect and network with someone in my potential professional field and I saw this as a great opportunity. All in all, I learned a lot from my own mentor as well the other mentors during our Pau Hana events. It was very rewarding to be able to talk with people who were working in jobs I aspired to attain after graduation. As a Freshman, I had no idea what direction in Business I wanted to pursue. Being able to talk with mentors from Finance backgounds, Accounting backgrounds and even HR backgrounds helped me to see what I was interested in. Being able to take part in JAIMS was an amazing opportunity and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for direct insight into a career in Business."
